Cornerstone edits taking minutes to update

Hi,

I’m having a really hard time working with Cornerstone due to long update lag times (often over 2 minutes)… text updates seem to be the biggest issue and frequently just hang forever. I’ve been troubleshooting with the hosting provider and they can’t find anything causing the delays on their side.

I’ve tried removing custom CSS, disabling and uninstalling plugins, etc. No improvement so far. I’ll send login info in a secure note in case that would help.

Thanks!

Jason

Hello Jason,

Thanks for writing in! You might have not meet the requirements to run the latest WordPress 5.0.3. You need at least PHP 7.2 and other server settings (https://wordpress.org/about/requirements/). This could possibly be the cause of the issue. In most cases you cannot update your PHP version yourself and need to contact your host about this. The upgrade process is an easy process and should be something your host can do for you without affecting your website or charging you for it. Here’s a letter you can send to your hosting company:

Dear host,

I'm interested in running the open-source WordPress <https://wordpress.org/> web software and
I was wondering if my account supported the following:

- PHP version 7.2 or greater
- MySQL version 5.6 or greater OR MariaDB version 10.0 or greater
- Nginx or Apache with mod_rewrite module
- HTTPS support

Looking forward to your reply.

And while at it, please also make sure that your PHP timeout limit is at least 300ms.

Hope this helps. Kindly let us know.

Thanks! PHP was indeed outdated and has been updated to 7.2.13. The other stuff meets the requirements.

Unfortunately I just tried updating some text and it took 80 seconds. :frowning:

Hi Jason,

I checked and the limit is already increased but I can still verify the issue, are you on shared hosting?

Some host throttles the requests and and for every change you made, it issues requests to the server. That includes post request, preview request, and so on. Some also throttles the CPU usage in which affects the requests and can get slower.

The amount of changes and editing you’re doing could trigger that issue which unfortunately, the builder or the theme has no control. If your host do that, then I recommend doing the editing outside the text element (like notepad or any text editing application) and just copy and paste the text. With this, it minimizes the requests of the current page within the builder.

Thanks!

Hi,

Thanks for the reply. I have a dedicated WP hosting account at Bluehost.

Editing text in notepad is a big step backwards from even before Cornerstone – the kind of pages I’m making really need that continuous back-and-forth since I’m playing with layouts and everything is associated with images, video, etc.

It sounds like I need to get a new hosting provider. Do you folks have a list of providers who work well with X? I was surprised, for example, to learn yesterday that Bluehost had my site on an outdated version of PHP even though I’ve been paying for their premium WP-optimized service. :stuck_out_tongue:

The Cornerstone performance issues are really a bummer, it makes trying to update stuff excruciatingly painful.

Thanks!

Jason
