Cornerstone Color Picker Values are Just Wrong

Hey team,

I made a short video clip to explain the issue but I’ll describe below as well:

  1. Use a digital color meter to accurately measure the correct value of an asset on screen – rgb(17, 17, 17) in this case
    a) The measurement is directly off of an XD file
    b) Yes, the value measured is the same as is found by using XD itself
  2. Tell Cornerstone to use rgb(17, 17, 17) as the background of a section
  3. The color looks too light – it is clearly not the same value when you look at it
  4. Load the page in the browser and visually compare to the XD document. Definitly not the same
  5. Use the same color meter to measure the output value on the page
  6. Color meter measure rgb(24, 24, 24), which is significantly different

What is happening here? Please tell me this can be fixed.

Hey @simeoned,

This looks like a problem in your browser and/or computer only. I can say that because:

  1. I’ve tested all my sites and rgb(17,17,17) Section Background in Cornerstone is picked up by my color picker as #111111 in the frontend (live page) which translates to rgb(17,17,17) according to Rapid Tables Hex to RGB color conversion. My monitor’s color profile is sRGB, in case that is important.

  2. I checked your site and color picked a couple of areas (see screenshots below). The result is the same, my color picker picks them up as #111111 which again translates to rgb(17,17,17).

There could be something on your browser and/or computer that is making everything darker. The only test you could do is color pick on a completely different computer because, as you can see above, I checked your website itself and it returns rgb(17,17,17). If the issue is with Pro, I’ll get a darker color on all sites, even yours.

By the way, visually, your site appears as a “lighter black” to me unlike in your video. Color pick inside the square areas in my screenshot below which is a side by side comparison of your site and my site. Both return #111111 or rgb(17,17,17) in my color picker.

Hope that helps.

So a a few years ago I set up some custom color profiles for my 3 screens using a Datacolor SpyderX Pro. I have never noticed any issues with color variations like I was seeing with this project. This was too significant to ignore though.

After trying everything else I could think of I just reverted my screens back to default sRGB color space and the values are looking and behaving as I would expect. Well, mostly… There are some weird things about XD itself but that is more than I want to get into here and doesn’t really serve to do anything but muddy the waters of this discussion.

Thanks for the help /consideration with this problem. I will keep thinking about this and offer any other insight I have as I find it. Thanks again
