Hi there, I have several different post categories eg Recent Events and Upcoming Events. When using the classic recent posts element i thought i could set the element to show which particular category of posts to show but it seems not.
So on the front page I want to be able to show only posts from “Upcoming events” category and then show the other posts categories on a different page.
Is this element capable of this or is there another way?
Please help with this.

Yes, you should be able to set the category that the Recent Post element will display.
You may set the slug category in the element itself.
You can find the categories in Posts > Categories.
