Classic Google Map problem

Hi, I’m having problems with the google api key that I put in the api key field of the classic google map settings. I’ve followed the instructions on how to obtain a key, then I put it but it doesn’t load the location. I see the static portion of the area interested which is correct but I get an error message on the map that says “failed to load”. What am I doing wrong? Third time I’ve tried it and it’s always faulty. Thank you.

Hi Francesco,

Based on your description, it doesn’t seem that you are getting the error below:

But just in case you are, then the problem is an incorrect Google Map API Key.

Now, assuming that is not what you’re getting, I suggest you test these:

  1. Remove “markers” on the map. See if that helps.
  2. Try using the Map element instead of the Classic Google Map
  3. Test for plugin conflict. Here’s a video from our channel that will walk you through this process https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7n0cvKU68E. The example in that video is not for testing Google Map conflicts but the principles are the same.

Give any of them a try and come back to us if none helped.

Thanks.

this is the error I get

I’ve tried the three steps but it didnt work.

Hey Francesco,

This is a problem with your API setup. Our Google Map elements will just show the map if the API is correct and provided there are no conflicting third-party plugins.

To aid you with investigating this issue, visit the page where you’ve added the map and open the browser’s console. If you don’t know how to do that, check this article first: https://support.airtable.com/hc/en-us/articles/232313848-How-to-open-the-developer-console

The Console will show you the Google Map error. Usually, the error message contains a link to further reading or guide to fix the API issue. Follow the link or contact Google Maps support to learn why your API is having issues.

In case you’re not aware and if you’re interested, know that you can use the Map Embed method alternatively. The setup is much simpler. Just go to your desired location in Google Maps, click the Share button, copy the Embed Code and paste it in the Embed Code Box in the map element.

Hope that helps.

Thank you, I’ve found out that I have to enable Billing on the Google Cloud Project. Does it mean that I have to pay in order to use this feature? I’ve tried the embedding with classic map element and it works, but the size is smaller than the classic google map element.

Hello Francesco,

You do not need to pay for the Google API key. Simply generate one and add the key to your map.
To know more how you can generate and have your own Google Map API key, check the video below:

Hope this helps.

I’ve just switched to the element “map” (not classic map) and it works better. Thank you anyways.

Glad it works now and you’re most welcome!
