Chronical footer template color and size change

In this footer template the back of the “THE” copy is black.
It’s a rectangular shape.

1. I can change color of the rest of the template just not that area.
   how do i do that?
2. how do you increase the size of that black rectangle.?
   Because if I use longer words, the words run over the black block
   
3. its 1 column.
