Child theme broken after update from 7.2.3 to 9.1.4

Main theme works, but customizations are gone. I’m receiving the following in WP/Themes. Please advise.

The following themes are installed but incomplete.

Name Description
X – Child Theme The parent theme is missing. Please install the “x” parent theme.

Hi Graham,

Thanks for reaching out.
The error listed here occurs if the parent theme is not available to that child theme. But if the parent theme is already installed, and you are getting the same issue while activating the child theme, we need to investigate it through the WordPress Admin dashboard. Regarding the customization, if that is made in the child theme, it might be there but not showing as it is not working properly.
I would request you, please provide login credentials for your site in a secure note to examine it further, including:

– WordPress Site URL & Login URL
– WordPress Admin username/password

To create a secure note, click the key icon underneath any of your posts.

Thanks

Secure note added. Thank you.

Hello Graham,

I tried to access your site but the WordPress login URL is not working it is redirecting to another site. Please share the correct login URL in case you have customized the login URL.

Thanks

sorry about that. please clear cache and try again.

Hi Graham,

I have checked the WordPress admin dashboard and found multiple instances of the X theme in the Appearance > Themes. And after investigating, it has been found that the 7.2.3 version is not deletable, and might be the reason behind your problem. I would suggest you delete this specific version through FTP/CPanel, and check if that resolves your problem. The child theme can’t recognize the multiple instance of Parent Theme.

Hope it helps.
Thanks

Thanks for that info. I removed the old 7.2.3 them from the themes directory. The x-child theme is still broken. Do I need to do anything to re-link the child to the new parent?

Hi Graham,

I have checked the Child Theme but didn’t find any problem with that. I would suggest you download the Child Theme once again from the following link, and add the modified files and code to that.

I would suggest you take a backup of your website before doing it.

Thanks

Tried deleting my x-child directory and reinstalling via a new download. Still getting the message that:
The parent theme is missing. Please install the “x” parent theme.

Any other ideas on how I can use a child theme? It seems like my WordPress install is unaware of the parent X Theme. Is child theme compatible with a parent on version 9.1.4?

Thanks

Hello Graham,

You were having some issue with the child theme because you have uploaded the x_package.zip file and not the x.zip file which is why you were having this folder structure:

The folder structure needs to only have the wp-content/themes/x/. I have resolved the issue now and the X child theme can now be used.

Best Regards.
