Challenged by a couple small changes

Hello; I am trying to make a couple of small changes to our website. It’s XTheme, using the Education demo site from Design Cloud. It looks great, but I can’t figure out 2 things that should be relatively simple.

1. How can I modify the sidebar menu colour? We have it an orange colour but it’s a bit too bright.

2. The top of home page has a faded graphic and the words replaced. I want to put a * between the words, and add additional text underneath . But I can not figure out how to do that.

These are probably simple to experienced people (the person who did some of the website work is now gone and unavailable to help) but I’m banging my inexperienced head against the wall. Anyone got some advice? Screenshot attached. Thanks in advance!
