My client wants to display their posts in a format that is column based, NOTmasonry and not one column. They want a standard 3 column width page where all the columns line up symmetrically.
How can this be achieved?

Thanks for writing in! You can go to X > Theme Options > Blog > Archive > Style and select “Masonry”. Down below the option, you can also select the number of columns and select “Three”.
In most cases, the items will be displayed in masonry. If you make sure that your post titles, featured images and excerpts in the same height, you will have a 3 column layout identical to each other.

I was kinda looking for something a little less manual. I can’t really go back and tell my client and say make sure all your posts look the same. he’s gonna be like, uh…really?

With a custom css, you can set at least a minimum height for the post titles, featured images and for the excerpts. It just that with this custom css, you may approximate the length or heights of the entries that your client will have in his posts.
