Cannot update X to latest version

Hi guys,

I am currently unable to update X. I have never been able to update via automatic updates even though my license is validated. In the auto updates section of my WP dashboard, it acknowledges that I have v6.1.6 installed, and that the latest version is 6.3.8, however it gives me no way to update (see screenshot attached). Should there be an “update now” button of some description?? What am I supposed to see here in order to update?? I have also tried selecting X in the themes tab of my network admin dashboard, selecting “update” form the drop down menu and clicking “apply” but nothing happens. So I’ve never been able to use auto updates…

Every time I’ve updated I’ve had to do it manually. However, for some reason trying to update via FTP has always been unsuccessful. When attempting to upload the new X folder to my wp-content/themes directory, it always fails due to an “unknown error”. This is following (to the letter) your own update instructions listed here: https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/setup-updating-your-themes-and-plugins/62 including the file renaming etc… This being the case I have always had to resort to changing to one of the defualt WP themes temporarily, deleting X theme via the WP dashboard and reinstalling the new version in order to update.

I just tried to do this for version 6.3.8 (three times) and the .zip file would not upload in all three attempts. Each time it timed out so now I am stuck for what to do. To my knowledge there are no other methods for updating the theme… Ideally, I would love to get auto updates working so I don’t have to worry about this anymore so can we start there?

Thanks in advance,
T

Hi Thomas,

Thanks for writing in, and I’m sorry to hear that you’re having this issue. Basically what happens is that when you missed few major update releases, automatic update process will not be initiated to avoid possible issues. Because there could be major changes which affects to your site, if you’re updating from older versions.

So the best and recommended way is to test your updates on a staging server and then apply it to your live site.

If you cannot update automatically, the next best option would be to update via FTP. If you don’t have any FTP related connection issues, that should work without any issues. If you’re having issues replacing the files, you can delete X folder (/wp-content/themes/x) and Cornerstone folder (/wp-content/plugins/cornerstone) and upload a fresh copy there as on our update guide above.

If you’re having issues when installing X theme or plugins through your WordPress backend, you need to check the following settings on your server.

  1. PHP Upload Max Size
  2. Post Max Size
  3. Max Script Execution time
You can refer to the following resource on how to increase those server configurations (https://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-increase-the-maximum-file-upload-size-in-wordpress/).

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply,

So are you saying I will be unable to ever get auto updates working because I have missed an update release? Is there any way to have it set up for auto updates in the future? Also how would I have missed a release? I have had my license validated since I purchased X and have never had automatic updates available…

I am still unable to update via FTP. This goes for themes and plugins. Every time I try to upload a theme/plugin folder to my server via FTP I get error messages saying “an unknown error occurred” even though the files open fine on my local drive and I don’t have a max upload size when uploading directly to my server. Other files upload fine.

My current post max size and upload max size on the WP backend is 8M. Max timeout is 300. I tried increasing both to 32M by editing my .htaccess file, my php.ini file and my theme functions file as per the article you linked and none of those methods have been successful. With the theme .zip file being bigger than my max upload size I suspect this is why I have not had success uploading directly to WP?

What can we do to get my site updated?

Hello Ghea,

You should also be able to see the automatic updates in the Dashboard area of wordpress when there is an update availabe but it is not safe to do an update to the live site if you are using an older version and X and updating to the newest version. In case you are not seeing the automatic updates in the dashboard, please check these steps in Revoking a licenses:

If you are not seeing the revoke validation option on the top of the page, try scrolling to the most bottom part of the page.

If you are not able to uploads files through FTP, it could be a permission issue. It would be best to get in touch with your hosting provider for this as they would be able to give better advice as they have access to your site files.

Please feel free to let us know how it goes.
