Can i place page: layout portfolio with filtering on the start page.
Is the Essential Grid the right thing to use?
Is there any shortcodes to use to handle that?

Yes, for your homepage, you can simply select Layout - Portfolio

Is the Essential Grid the right thing to use?

It depends on your preference, but if you want to use it, you need to select a No Container Template
then add your essential grid to your page content using the essential grid element.

have worked a couple of years with erat theme, so I can do these things, the question if i can apply portfolio with sorters on another page with a lot of other things on? as a shortcode, or script it in place.

For that, I recommend using Essential Grid and add it to your desired place of the page. The layout portfolio is a template, it can’t be moved or edited.
