I thought I could set the site to have a sidebar globally and change the pages to have a header and footer/container template. That gets rid of the sidebar but also the H1 title of each page.
Can I globally set the site so that the sidebar only shows on posts and not pages?

Thanks for writing in!
You have to set the layout as content left and sidebar right in Theme option.
Just go to Dashboard -> X -> theme option -> Layout and Design there you can choose the layout as the sidebar.
It will add sidebar globally to all pages and posts. Then you have to set all pages template as a container or blank container /header and footer so that the side won’t visible in the page.
