Am I right in thinking these are meant to be the iPad landscape/portrait breakpoints?
media (min-width: 768px) and (max-width: 979px)
media (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 767px)
If so these are not being recognised I am using an iPad Air 9.7" 2048x1536 I am using to test my site, would I need different breakpoints for that?

Thanks for writing in! The breakpoints will only work in smaller screens or old iPads. I think you will no longer need break points fore newer iPad because it has now the display of a typical desktop screen.
The 1024x768 resolution was also used with the original iPad Mini. The iPad 2 and the iPad Mini were the two best-selling iPad models, which makes this resolution still one of the most popular configurations “in the wild”. All modern iPads have gone to the Retina Display at various screen resolutions based on their individual screen size.
