Both front end and WP admin page are inaccessible after update

Hi,
yesterday Jetpack alerted me several times that my site was down as long as 2 hour periods.
I went into WP admin page and cleared the hosting and CDN caches.
During the procedure I have noticed prompts for Jetpack and WP 5.0 version upgrades.
I red the recommendations for failsafe upgrade of WP 5.0 and exported/downloaded the database to my local computer, just in case. Then I have updated the Jetpack. However, there was a warning message regarding some error which took place during the Jetpack update.
This was a first since the my site was built. Error message was in a form of a red band at the top of WP admin page.
I have refreshed the plugin updates page and re-tried. Same result.
I have launched the front end right after that and there was this error message instead of my homepage: " Sorry, you are not allowed to access this page"
I googled the forums including this one for solutions and all fingers pointed to backing up the plugins and deleting them altogether from the plugins folder and restoring them one by one until finding the culprit.
This seemed working as the site was there with sliders, forms, popups etc. missing and eventually everything came back as I restored the essential plugins.
However, this time WP admin page started giving HTTP 500 error?!!
Then I have imported the backed up database back with the hope of a total solution.
Nope. Now I am stuck with “houseofgusto.com is currently unable to handle this request.
HTTP ERROR 500” for both front and back ends.
My host does not provide a c-panel interface with file manager etc. so that I would go in and reset the htaccess.
I don’t know what caused this and what to do.
BTW, I did not update WP to 5.0 at all.
Any suggestions please?
Thank you.

Hi @tbingel,

Thanks for reaching out.

I recommend requesting a full restoration of your site to your hosting provider. And get some details about the error you’re getting. Without a file manager or FTP, there is no way you can enable debug logging nor fix files. And we could only provide suggestion based on the information that can see, which, unfortunately, I’m not sure what’s happening or what triggers it.

Again, I recommend getting the details of the error from your hosting provider if File manager or FTP is not really possible.

Thanks!

Hi,
I do have FTP access.
What can be done through FTP connection?
I will try to get the error log meanwhile.
Thank you.

Hi @tbingel,

I see, in that case, please check this guide about the FTP client.

Please check this https://www.wired.com/2010/02/ftp_for_beginners/, or this is https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-use-filezilla-to-transfer-and-manage-files-securely-on-your-vps if you wish to use Filezilla as your FTP client.

Then with the help of your FTP Client and text editor, edit the file wp-config.php of your site and set WP_DEBUG to true. Save that file and upload it overwriting the one in your server.

Then test your site again to where the internal server error is appearing, it should display the detail of the error. Then provide it in the secure note.

Thanks!

Hi,
I have set the debug mode on.
Where do I look for the error messages?
Thanks.

PS.
Error messages displayed in the secure message below are shown when I try to login my WP admin page.

Hi @tbingel,

Thanks, then please delete NATRO plugin through FTP. It’s the one that triggers these especially on menu.

Let me know

Hi,
actually there is no Natro plugin in my FTP access area.
This (Natro) is the name of the ISP also.
My hosting service is not a regular one I suppose as many of the default WP directories and files does not exist in the host space which is open to my access.
Could be a virtual machine environment or such.
Could you please take a look into my site files?
Thanks.

Hi @tbingel

In that case, please contact your hosting provider and ask them investigate this issue for you. Also make sure that you’re using PHP v5.6.x or later to avoid possible incompatibility issues.

Thanks!
