Basics about image - dimensions

Hi, there. Do you have a dummies’ guide to choosing the correct dimensions for images? Basically, I just like to know when to use square, portrait or landscape images. And how such decisions affect the appearance on different screen sizes.

From the “Add Media” in Wordpress, I got the impression that all my images have to be square. I believe for some templates in X theme, some photos have to be in landscape, some in portrait.

In the old Cornerstone, image place holders will indicate what dimensions the photos should be (e.g. 700 x 500). But with the new look, I don’t see such indication anymore in the Preview pane.

Also in the past, I could tell the Editor to hide certain things under different screen sizes. Where is this now in the new Cornerstone workspace? Eg, I want to use a landscape photo on a laptop screen, but a portrait version on a phone screen. Could you kindly guide me how I can do this?

I believe there is no definitive answer to your question, as it depends on many factors including your images orientation (portrait or landscape), where are you loading these images. Also, you might show alternative images per devices as you mentioned to make sure your images are looking great on most devices.
