Background video not playing in Chrome

We have a video background on our site, and I have the same issue as described in this thread from last year: https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/background-video-doesnt-play-in-certain-browsers/3037

For some reason the video will play for my colleagues or if I use Edge, but it won’t play when I use Chrome. I’ve cleared all caches and uninstalled/reinstalled Chrome - still no change.

Was this issue ever resolved?

Hey there,

Thank you for reaching out to us. I checked your site in Chrome and Firefox and the background video is working fine on my end in both browsers. This could be the OS specific or browser specific issue, I tested on Windows 10 system and it’s working fine on my end. Can you please tell us the OS and browser version you’re testing in so we can try replicating the issue?

Another thing, are you using a touch screen system? If yes then It’s a known behavior with hybrid devices (mixed of both desktop and mobile touch features). Most modern mobile and tablet devices now surpassed desktop screen resolution. Hence, it’s harder to detect if a device is a desktop or mobile since hybrid device specs are almost equal to a tablet.

The only thing that separates them now is touch feature, now they introduced it on laptop/desktop too. The background videos are disabled for mobile devices / touch devices, that might be the reason you’re not seeing the background video on your end. Try disabling the touch feature of your system and test your site again and it should work as expected.

Let us know how this goes!

Yes, I’m using a touchscreen. I turned off the touch option, but now it looks like we have another error. The background video isn’t playing for anyone on the live site.

When I go into the Cornerstone editor, I can see the background playing as it should. I tried creating a new section, but it looks like there’s no longer the option to add multiple layers. Am I missing something?

Hello There,

In normal browsers, the background video is playing. I have checked your site in Chrome and Firefox. The media js element which is a WordPress default may have a bug that could not distinguish a mobile device or a touch device which is why the video is automatically disabled.

When you create a new section especially the v2 section, by default, the background video option is hidden. Please go to X > Settings > Permissions > User Preference and select “Advanced Mode” so that when you go back to Cornerstone, the advance options will display.

Hope this helps. Please let us know how it goes.

Hello,

I have the same issue on my website (www.it-consults.eu) with a surface book 2. The background video that I chose on the Page settings “Slider settings: above masterhead” is not being displayed on Chrome. However it works when I use Edge.

How can we fix that under Chrome?

Hey Jakub,

Regretfully, touch screen devices are treated as mobile device and Chrome disables the background video for performance reasons. There is no workaround for that regretfully.

I’d recommend that you set a Video Poster Image to show on mobile and touch screen devices.

Thank you for understanding.

Ok thank you for your answer.

BTW, no notification was sent to my email, and nothing appears on the Apex dashboard after you’ve replied. Had to search for the thread to see that there was a reply.
