August 2021 Cornerstone update issue

I’m so sorry, but I’ve just updated Cornerstone, and the new organization for the page builder layout is not okay. You’ve lost any of the intuitiveness that you had. With each section, “Children” “Layout” “Setup” “Size” etc, being in expandable sections, it’s horribly frustrating to have to remember what particular items are in which section after so long just scrolling to where they were in the builder. Further, I have NO idea how to set up row and column layouts with this new set up. Completely non-intuitive. Frustrated.

Hi @JonesHouseCreative,

Thanks for reaching out about this, and I’m sorry to hear it’s made things more frustrating. One of the challenges with navigating elements in the previous version is having to move your mouse all the way over to the control navigation bar to switch sections. We feel that keeping everything accessible from within the Inspector itself is an overall improvement. We’ve also gotten feedback from people being overwhelmed with the number of controls available, so we added the collapsing subgroups to help make it more palatable especially for new users. We’ve also reorganized the elements themselves to be as consistent as possible with one another.

For example, when you see the “Design” group, you’ll always find your margin, padding, border, etc. there regardless of element. You’ll notice that all styling controls now occupy their own line where previously we had two controls side-by-side. This change was necessitated by responsive styling to ensure everything had a label that can be clicked. We did move things around extensively, so regretfully this will take some getting used to.

Here’s something that may help in regards to the collapsing sections. The builder will always remember what you left open or closed. If you hold cmd/ctrl and click a section it will open all the sections. If you do this and open them all, you’ll be closer to the way it was before.

As for creating a row/column layout, you can do this: Inspect a Row and go to the “Layout” group. You should see a control letting you choose a number of columns. This setting will apply to all breakpoints. If you click the label next to the control you can set the column layout for any screen size.

Thanks for your response, Alexander. It was considerate and well said. I feel heard.

I can appreciate the need to make adjustments, and I’m sure over time, I’ll find these new controls.

Best,
Matt Jones

Sounds good Matt, take care!

Hi, I am wanting to know where this “control” is to set the column layout for each screen size? It seems that the current setting is applying to all breakpoints and I cannot seem to find how to disable this. I’ve been an avid Themeco user for over 7 years and have always loved your updates, but this one has been a bit confusing. I’m sure I’ll like it after I use it for a bit, but I can’t figure out how to configure columns on different screen sizes. Thank you!

Hi @segalomedia,

I suggest that you check your video to have understanding about the Responsive Styling.

Hope that helps.

Thank you.

Hi Alexander,
So I just followed your instructions to “Click the label next to the control…” to be able to set the column layout for any screen size. Without you telling me that in this thread, I don’t think I would have ever found that. Is there a more intuitive way to make that setting available? I was getting so frustrated trying to get my column layouts to “stick” on the individual screen sizes.

Thank you for being so responsive to our questions, though. You guys are impressing me with your customer service.

Cheers,
Matt Jones

Hi Matt,

Glad to hear you were able to make those changes. I understand it isn’t as obvious as the previous version when all the breakpoint icons were visible in the Inspector. We went through several rounds of testing with customers in the beta forum (opt-in from by editing your account info), and this is the best version of everything we tried, so at this point we don’t plan on making any more iterations. While it might take a bit of getting used to, this version is much more powerful because it allows any styling properties to change responsively instead of just row and grid layouts.

I agree with you, particularly now that I know about the additional controls. After you showed me that, I went through and found that many others of the labels also allow for responsive styling, which I never would have known. Any chance those control labels that are buttons could be given a button styling or at the least a hover styling more than a brighter font color?

Hi @JonesHouseCreative,

Like I said, we don’t plan on changing it at this point. If you want though you can customize your own experience using the Custom UI CSS feature of the Dev Toolkit (enable from preferences). You could target some of the Inspector classes and make adjustments, just keep in mind we can’t really support those customizations or ensure classes aren’t changed/removed/added in future releases.

Awesome! Didn’t know I could do that.

Very much appreciate you and your team’s attentiveness. Wishing you all the best!
