As Website Goes Live, Home Page Issue

Hi There

Last night we tried to put the website live but ran into a problem. The pages other than the Home page could be published and made public just fine. When it comes to the home page, we only get the page we have had live for a long time now, which is the ‘Web Site Coming Soon’ page.

So we can view the pages online properly EXCEPT when we click on the HOME button in the header of the page, it just keeps going to the ‘Website Coming Soon’.

We thought maybe the problem was that when we go to HostGator and look under Website Essentials / My Installs / Account Installs, we see there are 2 Wordpress versions there. There is WordPress 4.8 and WordPress 4.9.8. The one our website is built on is version 4.9.8

I contacted HostGator and the tech person said that was not the issue having the 2 WordPress versions. He figured it was maybe a plugin issue but did say all our plugins were showing up fine on their end. He then warned about removing plugins and damaging our site and that I should contact the developer BUT I’m not sure if a plugin is the problem or which plugin it would be.

Not wanting to cause more damage, I am reaching out to you, in hope you can help.

Are you able to see what is causing our site to keep displaying the ‘Website Coming Soon’ page and how that can be turned off?

Also, when I am in HostGator, I only have a password to access the 4.9.8 version but I do not have a password for the 4.8 version. When I try to reset the password, I get a line that says ‘Could not find any users attached to this install’

Any thoughts on how to proceed, would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Carl,

Thank you for the very detailed information. It seems that you have modified one of the templates in your homepage which made the homepage non editable in Cornerstone. I am not sure which file or what have you added because the file editor in Appearance > Editor is not available. If you can provide us ftp so that we can check your child theme or if it is not possible, please download your child theme, zip the files and send it over to us so that we can test your child theme in one of our local testing servers.

Please let us know how it goes.

Do you mean the FTP username and password with HostGator? If so (I hope that is what you mean), here is that info:

Username: lgfproductions
Password: 55Froggy66

Did you look at that Home page I mentioned in All Pages, which is just below the one named ‘Home - Front Page’? That page (‘Home- private’) looks fine in view mode and can be edited in Cornerstone.

What we found last night (tried 2 or 3 different pages to confirm this) is that each time we tried to make a page the ‘Home’ page, it messed it up and it could not be viewed or edited in Cornerstone. Once it was no longer the ‘Home’ page, it was okay. You may like to test this yourself also.

It just seems like anytime a page is made to be the ‘Home’ page, it is being overridden by the current home page that is saying ‘Website Coming Soon’. We are not 100% how to turn that off. All we can think is…is it in that other version of Wordpress on HostGator…the 4.8 version where that can be turned on or off?

Hope you can help us…this is not good after all the work in this website…

Hi Carl,

The ftp login provided doesn’t seem work.

Can you check if there is an index.html or index.htm file in the root directory of your site. If there is, please delete it.

Also, please make sure to provide logins only in Secure Note and not in public.
