Hello,
I would like to build an archive page while utilizing the preexisting templates. Unfortunately, I am getting this error when I create a new layout. Please see attached screenshot. Thank you
Hi Jennine,
Thank you for writing in, please utilize the preview panel to preview the correct page (https://prnt.sc/13gzryc). If it is an archive category page, then select Post Category and select one of your categories on the dropdown.
If the issue persists, please provide us login credentials on a “Secure Note” so we can take a closer look.
Hope it helps,
Cheers!
Hello
Thanks for your response. Unfortunately, it’s still not working properly. Please see the screenshot. I will attach the credentials. Thanks in advance
Hello @Jennine,
You are trying to create an archive layout but you have not set the Posts page(Blog post list page) from the Settings—>Reading—>Posts page just because you are getting this error.
Or you need to select any category in the layout builder as suggested by my colleague @friech so that builder would render the posts in the preview mode.
Thanks
when I set the blog post page in the settings to “message” which is my blog page it allows me to build my archive page using the preexisting templates but it completely changes my layout in the “message” page which is my main blog page. I used the layout builder to build that page along with the single-page layout.
When I implement the other suggestion by your colleague @friech by selecting the category in the layout builder, the home page still shows and I am not able to select an archive template. Please see screenshot of the implementation. Thank you
Hi Jennine,
Just making sure we are on the same page.
We’re talking about the Layout named test archive1
right? and you want this layout to be applied on your category pages (News post
, and Press release
and other archive pages).
The problem is you can not build properly because of this error:
That error notice is showing up because the builder is previewing the Layout on the Home page (as we can see on this screenshot), and since this layout is assigned to Archive the homepage is Not Suitable for preview.
This is why I advise above to change the preview setup, set to Post Category and select one of your Category (News post
, or Press release
to preview)
Hope it helps,
Cheers!
yes, great that worked. Thank you. I had to set it to uncategorized and my post are not being displayed. What will the url be for this archive page?
Hello @Jennine,
Please go to Posts > Categories, select a category then click the “View” link.
You should be able to view the “Uncategorized” archive.
Cheers.
ok thanks. Am I able to customize that url to: https://www.snpnyc.org/message-archive/ as opposed to https://www.snpnyc.org/category/message-archive/?
Hi @Jennine,
You can remove the category slug from the URL, I would suggest you go through the following article on how to remove the category from the URL.

Hope it helps.
Thanks
