I add the widget to the footer. The widget footer contains social logos… When I select the footer to add it appears in teh footer area but it is very, very small. Like a few pixels in size.

I have added the link to Social icons and it comes in Huge size as shown in the given screenshot. If you are getting in a different size, please provide a screenshot.
I have checked your Footer and found that you are using the widget in Container 3. I would suggest you instead of Widget use the Social element which has options for size and others. Please go through the following article on this.
