Active State on Buttons

Okay - I must be missing something. Is there any easy way (or even a quick CSS way) to create an active or selected state for on-page buttons that link to anchors?

I’m familiar with interaction and even :active but I’d like for it to ‘stay’ in a selected state until another button is clicked.
