503 on search results

Hello,

I discovered that with my site https://devhps.site, when I search for ‘annual general meeting’ I get a 503 error, service unavailable - using Relevanssi as the back-end engine.

I contact CloudWays and we tried disabling some plugins without a result.

I switched themes to 2023, and the results work normally.

The search URL is this https://devhps.site/?s=annual+general+meeting

With Pro enabled I get this: https://share.cleanshot.com/8hhVLMnn

Without Pro, with 2023 theme enabled I get this: https://share.cleanshot.com/Gvfztj8T

The results without Pro make sense.

I’m stuck - I’ll add a secure note and ask for help please.

Bill.

I’ve found the culprit - “The Excerpt” - that element is on the search results page. If I remove it, the results show, if I put it back I get the 503 error.

Hi Bill,

Thanks for reaching out.
I checked the same in my local environment but didn’t find the issue. There might be some different reasons behind your issue, and I would like to suggest troubleshooting the following common issue to help us recognize the reason.

1.Theme Related Issue
2.Plugin Conflict
3.Theme Update related issue
4.Child Theme Related issue
5.CSS/JS Customization
6.Disabling Cache
7.Disabling CDN

If you discover that an issue is coming from a custom code or 3rd party plugin, kindly consult with a developer or contact the plugin author. Please note that we do not provide support for custom codes and 3rd party plugins.
If none of the above helps, please provide login credentials for your site in a secure note to examine it further, including:

– WordPress Site URL & Login URL
– WordPress Admin username/password

I added a secure note. As I said, the problem diagnosis right now is the presence of The Excert on that page. I tried debugging plugins and using the Query Monitor, but when the 503 hits, the site doesn’t return any content at all, making it hard to debug. Using the Theme 2023 doesn’t show this bug, so that narrows it down the Pro and The Excerpt - as the query works with Pro.

Bill.

Hi Bill,

I have tested your website and found the issue you described here. I would suggest you please copy your live site to a staging server so we could troubleshoot freely without breaking your live site.
And give us access to the secure note including:

– WordPress Site URL & Login URL
– WordPress Admin username/password

To create a secure note, click the key icon underneath any of your posts.

Thanks

I cloned the site, I’ll attach a new secure note.

Hi Bill,

I have checked by deactivating all the plugins in your staging site and found the search is working. It seems that one of the plugins is the reason behind your problem. I would suggest you activate the plugin one by one and the last plugin you activate before the issue back is the reason.

Thanks

Thanks for the help. It turned out to be Relevanssi - I’d turned on the custom excerpts feature, without actually using the necessary code to pick them up. I switched this off, and things are back to normal. Yet again - turning off all the plugins revealed a clue.

Hi Bill,

Glad that you are able to find the reason behind your problem.

Thanks
