(404) Page Not Found Error - "Ever feel like you're in the wrong place?"

Hello, after migrating a site to my client’s web host, their portfolio pages (in this case called ‘Projects’) is not showing up. Instead, the page displays: (404) Page Not Found Error - “Ever feel like you’re in the wrong place?”, which is apparently related to their web host (GoDaddy). Here’s the screen capture:

Their website shows correctly on their staging site, which I have on my server (through another hosting company).

I do remember talking to GoDaddy during the time of the site launch, and they said that the PHP version was 5.3, which I was very surprised by (who uses 5.3?!?! That’s so old and outdated!). Apparently, such an outdated version of PHP could cause their site to get hacked. Do you think this could be the case? Or is in an incomplete site migration?

I was using UpdraftPlus to migrate their site, but they were having lots of issues with their plugin, so I switched All-in-One WP Migration and (aside from having a HUUUUGE file size of about 600 MB – possibly from Updraft making backups of the backups?)), everything seemed to be ok.

If you could point me in the right direction, that’d be wonderful. Thank you.

Hello There,

Thanks for writing in! This error might be because of the portfolio slug conflict. Please go to X > Launch > Options > Portfolio and make sure that the custom url slug is not projects.

Please let us know how it goes.

Thank you for the speedy response! I went to the section you suggested, and sure enough, the custom URL slug was exactly that: ‘projects’, so I erased it and saved. However, the page is still displaying Godaddy’s “404 Error” page. What’s strange is that the site is displaying correctly on the staging site (as I said before, it’s hosted by a diff. company).

Even after clearing my cache and refreshing the browser multiple times, there’s still no change. I then tried putting something else in the custom URL field, replacing “projects” with “blog”, but still nothing.

Do you think it could be an .htaccess issue? I did not actually update the file when I updated their new website.

I will provide you the login credentials privately so you can investigate further.

Hello There,

This issue could be beyond the WP dashboard. Did you made any changes to your .htaccess or maybe you have a projects folder in your directory with your WP installation folder. Could you please provide ftp access to that we can check thoroughly?

Thank you in advance.

Hi @RueNel. If I made any changes to the .htaccess, it was done many, many months ago when I was first building the “dev” site, so I don’t remember. But I’d assume that whatever migration tool (All in One WP Migration, in this case) would override the old .htaccess data on the “live/production” site, no?

The “staging” site’s permalink settings is set to “Day and name”, so I changed the permalink to the same setting on the live site, as well as changing the custom URL setting back to ‘projects’, but there seems to be no change. I’m not sure what I am missing. I will provide you the FTP details.

Hello There,

The issue maybe happening because you have 301 redirects in your .htaccess. Please see it in the secure note.

I have temporarily commented it out. And still there was an issue. I temporarily renamed the page slug to our-projects and for your custom portfolio slug, I used project-item. I still do not know why this is happening. Did you added any other page, post, category or tag that goes with the same Projects name?

Please let

Yes, the page is displaying correctly now, thank you so much! I don’t believe I added any other page/post/category/tag but I’ll have to look into it when I get more time. I really think it’s due to using All in One WP Migration, which I had to change the Permalink setting for. I used UpdraftPlus in the past and never had an issue with site migration, until the past couple weeks when they were having many issues. When you said that you temporarily commented out the 301 redirects, do you mean that they will stay there for as long as it’s left that way?

Hi There,

Glad it is now displaying correctly.
Yes, as long as it is not deleted, it will still be there.

Great, thank you @Lely. (I’m going to have to remove the 301 redirects. I’m sure this is due to the All-in-One WP Migration plugin.) Thank you also to @RueNel, you’ve been a big help! Cheers.

You’re most welcome!
