This is my first major update. I got my update notice from ThemeForest and I dutifully downloaded and unzipped the contents. I moved the x_package folder to my desktop. I went to the Knowledge Base for instructions to see what to do with that new folder. The KB instructions were overly complicated and there are a couple of major steps missing for noobs.

1 – All Files & Documentation vs. Installable WordPress File Only

How do I know which one I want?

2 – Connect to your server via FTP and navigate to your /wp-content/themes/ directory.

Both sets of instructions give this as a necessary step and both fail to give a clue to noobs HOW to naviagte there and what to drop in or replace once there. If it’s the entire folder, can’t you specify that? If it’s only part of the x-package folder, what pieces and what do I do with the rest of the contents of that folder?

I read several threads on how to get to the FTP. I went to my host cPanel and I still felt confused. I have an icon for File Manager and one for FTP Manager. I clicked on the latter and it gives me the option to Add FTP Account. I don’t think I need to do this because at the bottom it shows a name assigned to me when I opened my Host Account which is labeled a Special FTP Account. There are two paths there: myusername and myusername_logs. Both have an action button saying: Configure FTP Client. Once again, I’m completely clueless what these are for and if they are to be employed in the vague Knowledge Base instructions to update X.

I happened to look at X Theme on the WordPress Dashboard>Appearance>Theme where I discovered it said “update is available.” I elected to use that path for the update since the instructions from Themeco have my head spinning. It appeared to go well. I just did it again this morning to move to 4.3.2 and I got this message:

    Downloading update from http://updates.theme.co/56ff66a0f2e50ddad54ecd8c408964255109db1d/latest/x.zip…

    Unpacking the update…

    Installing the latest version…

Removing the old version of the theme…

    Theme updated successfully.

    Cornerstone says it’s 1.1.0.

Now I’m wondering if I’m done or if I still need to do something with the FTP. I was hoping this would be more of a one-click solution. If it is, then I’m wondering why it isn’t cited on the Knowledge Base as an option for the clueless, like me.

The major feature of this roll-out seems to be skeleton. I’ve looked for it. I’ve refreshed all my pages. Where does skeleton live? All I’ve found out is that it’s on a side panel. Is it on the Customizer panel or the Cornerstone panel? Is it tucked inside a sub-menu? Are there any other clues that will confirm that my child theme is actually up-to-date now?

I’m hoping for clarification. This is another brickwall that I’d like to blast through and move on to the next several I have impeding my progress.

Success! I confirmed that I accomplished a one-click update through the WordPress>Appearance>Theme update button. I’m even more confused about why there are unnecessarily hard instructions on the Knowledge Base. I spent the last two days going in circles trying to update. Please, put the simple method up there for the non-developer crowd.

I do not remember if I signed up for automatic updates to get that function to show up in the WordPress panel. I tried looking that up on the Themeco site today to make sure that I’m signed up for it, but the instructions to get to the addons page did not have an active link and I couldn’t find where I needed to be by doing a search. Perhaps I found my answer and don’t need to worry about that now. I did read that ‘automatic’ is not behind the scenes, that it does take the action of the site owner to initiate it. That’s a good thing so that we can all remember to back up our site or at least our CSS changes first.

I found Skeleton! It’s a tiny Picture-in-Picture looking icon at the bottom border of the Cornerstone panel. It’s between the small i in the black dot and the phone/monitor size icon by the save button.

It works! I think it’s going to help me zero in and make more sense of the elements I’m trying to modify. Maybe I can make a little progress today.

I’d still like some clarification on what to do with the unzipped folder on my desktop and whether I need to concern myself with FTP.

    Hey there,

Glad you’ve sorted it out and thank you for your feedback. We add things up to our Knowledge Base overtime to make our instructions easy for all.

You can delete the folder in your desktop or keep it somewhere else since you’ve uploaded it to your site and WordPress automatic update is in place you don’t have to worry of installation anymore.

FTP is for advanced users who wants to modify X templates and other PHP or WordPress configurations. If you don’t need to be advanced, you can skip learning FTP.

    Thanks.
