    Hi there,

Unfortunately the new X Theme Update wiped out my topbar content and functionality at http://dev.ylpl.net/wordpress/

Is there any way to restore my X Theme to it’s previous version? I was able to find some saved HTML code for my topbar and restored it somewhat but I assumed (and obviously assumed wrong) that my PHP will be saved no matter what so I didn’t think twice about updating. If I can restore it, then I can retrieve my old PHP code and have it’s full functionality back.

This also opened my eyes to using a Child’s Theme. What are the pros and cons to switching over to one? Obviously, I know that this hiccup wouldn’t happen if I switched over to one. I wouldn’t lose any content if I were to switch over, correct?

If you can let me know, that will be very much appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Daniel

    Hi there,

Thanks for writing in! I’m sorry but if you haven’t setup a child theme already, your custom code cannot be recovered. Only way is to contact your hosting provider and ask them to restore a previous backup OR if you have a backup, you can restore them as well.

Child theme lets you to keep your custom code separate from the X theme that we provide (also called parent theme). So that when you update parent theme separately and your child theme remains separately as well.

Please check our child theme setup guide here (https://community.theme.co/kb/how-to-setup-child-themes/)

    Hope that’s clear.

Thank you for the feedback, it definitely does. Are there any cons to activating a Child’s Theme? Also, I wouldn’t lose any work I’ve already done on the Parent Theme if I were to activate it, correct?

    Thanks again,

    Daniel

    Hi Daniel

    That is correct,

I would just reccomend you before activating your Child Theme, going to

WP Admin > Addons and downloading your Customizer settings.

Once you activate your child theme you can go to the same place and upload them.

Once you have a Child theme installed your changes will never be wiped out again.

    Hope that helps

Thanks, that definitely helps. I’m just a little confused on what you mean by downloading the Customizer settings. When I click on Addons, I see Customizer Manager. Is this what you’re referring to? If so, how would that work?

Are there any negatives you can think of when downloading a Child theme?

I just want to make sure that my content remains the same (i.e. everything in appearance, custom CSS, Javascript, etc) with the added convenience of a Child’s Theme additional customization that will remain intact after updates.

Thank you again, I really appreciate your help. 🙂

Also, in addition, I understand that if for whatever reason the Child Theme is not for me, I can always revert back to my original parent theme, correct?

    Thanks again!

    Hey There,

    Thanks for writing back!

Kindly walk-through the guidelines to export customizer settings of your current setup :

Thank you, I followed the guidelines and saved the JSON File Type on my PC and in my Google Drive. If anything were to happen, I would just choose that JSON File and drag it in the Customizer Manager to import, correct? Sorry for the redundancy, I just want to make sure I followed the steps correctly in its entirety. 🙂

    Thanks again,

    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,

Yes, but please note that the json file only contains customizer settings and not theme files.

If you would like to have a full back up of your site you can try either of these third party plugin.

Thanks, yeah we have backed up our site through UpdraftPlus. The reviews looked good; Is that a plugin you recommend as well?

    Thanks again,

    Daniel

    Hi there,

So I updated to a Child’s Theme doing all the steps covered before. Once updated, my entire sidebar was wiped out and the widgets I used cannot be found. I thought it was due to the Customizer Manager as mentioned before but when I uploaded the .JSON File with my previously saved settings, nothing changed. Do you know how I can recover my sidebar widgets? Would I need to use one of my backups?

    Thanks,

    Daniel

    Hi Daniel,

Child Theme should not remove the widgets, might be something else caused this. If you have backup, you can try restoring that.

    Thanks!

That’s what I thought too. I do have a backup but since it’s backed up from when I had just the Parent Theme installed, would it interfere with the Child Theme?

In addition, I actually deleted the Child Theme to see if it would revert back and my sidebar indeed did come back. But when I installed and activated the Child Theme a 2nd time, once again, the sidebar disappeared. Worst case, I could repopulate the sidebar, it’s not that big of a deal, but I’m left scratching my head for the reason why this could have happened.

    Thanks again,

    Daniel
