So what do I do? I need to make updates to the site but I want to do it in the staging server and then copy the entire thing to the live server. If the live server is validated and the staging isn’t, would there be a problem? If I revoke license to the live site and give the license to the staging site, will my website still show? Really not sure what to do here.

Thanks for writing in! We have revised our validation process and now you don’t need to generate an API key to validate your site. You can use the purchase code provided by Envato. Also you don’t have to revoke your live site’s license because we’re now providing an additional license key for your development environments.
