Nabeel AModeratorHi there,
Thanks for writing in! Child Theme allows you to make code changes that won’t be overwritten when an X update is released. If you have not made any code change in X theme, Updates won’t effect your site however if you have made code changes then I’d suggest you to setup the Child Theme and move all of your Customization in the Child Theme before updating to the latest version. After your child theme is setup, please review how we recommend making template changes in Customization Best Practices.
Hope this helps!

Rue NelModeratorHello There,
When you published your site, it won’t matter what you will use. Using child theme is must if you have done some customizations like template changes, custom functions, etc. As explained in the previous reply, all of these changes and customizations will not be overwritten when there is an X update.
You will have to manually move your customizations to the child theme. It means that you have to copy the files you have changes into the child theme’s folder. If all your customizations were added just in the customizer, then you do not have to worry anything when you activate the child theme. Just make sure to backup your customizer settings in X Addons > Customizer Manager before activating the child theme. You can use the back up to import your customizer settings to preserve all your settings the same after the child theme activation.
Hope this make sense.
