cgenselParticipantHello,
I have a question about SSL. I purchased SSL through my hosting service (we use GoDaddy). We just activated it on the completed site and the site isn’t working (thehaw.org). They told me that it takes awhile to adapt to the http access file before it works right (up to 3 days). However, to be on the safe side I checked the forum and found an article (https://community.theme.co/kb/hosting-how-to-activate-ssl/) stating that in order to activate SSL I need to request that through you at X? Is this correct?
If so, what needs to be done to activate the SSL? I can’t even access the WPAdmin for my site right now…do I need to deactivate the hosting SSL then do something to my site before reactivating it?
The article I found discussed adding the following code to the .htpaccess file…I’m not really sure how to access this file. If this is in fact what I need to do, is it possible to have the website accessible from either www. OR without the http://www.? The suggested code in the article makes it sound like you have to choose one or the other. Also, I assume I would replace .com with .org as needed?
Thanks for your help,
Katie

JadeModeratorHi Katie,
That link is for the user that are using our hosting service that why it was mention to request the SSL certificate through us.
Since you have the SSL certificate with GoDaddy, you will have to get in touch with them and see if everything is setup correctly.
Let us know how it goes.

cgenselParticipantHi Jade,
Thanks- to confirm does that mean I do NOT need to add any code to the htaccess file?
Thanks,
Katie

DarshanaModeratorHi there,
You can use .htaccess method or there are other options. First of all, please use the following site and enter your domain name and see whether you have properly installed a SSL certificate (https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/).
If you have a valid certificate, then follow this resource (http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/how-to-add-ssl-and-https-in-wordpress/).
Hope that helps.

cgenselParticipantHi guys,
I apologize but I am now very confused. To clarify, I DO need to modify my .htaccess files? The other response suggested I did not, the next suggested I did. Right now, since installing the SSL, my site has been down for 2 days and my hosting company can’t seem to figure out why it isn’t “taking”…I imagine they work with WP sites all the time so I’m not sure why they didn’t bring up the .htaccess situation. Because it is down, I can’t even get into my admin so I’d have to use the .htaccess file method to fix things, or remove the SSL so my site works again.
Anyways, in short, can you please confirm that yes there is definitely a step I need to take on my end to make the SSL that my host installed work properly on my site?
Thanks so much for the help, as always,
Katie

cgenselParticipantHello,
Please disregard- my host was able to resolve this. Their hosting service normally takes care of the .htaccess file updates automatically but had glitched for some reason. It is now fixed.
Thanks for sharing all of the useful info about modifying that file and checking SSL, I learned a lot of important info for the future if ever needed.
Thanks as always for the great support!!
