LeannaParticipantAre you testing it http://www.leannacinquanta.com on a touch-screen computer? If not, then that is why it is working for you. As I said, http://www.tellasia.org is running a heavy plugin called Ubermenu and it works all the time on any computer. However on http://www.leannacinquanta.com I am running X only with no plugin and it does not drop down on my touchscreen laptop. The code needs to recognize that only an available width of 480px constitutes “touch screen” anything wider is full-size and should respond to hover.

RadModeratorHi Leanna,
It’s a hybrid device, laptop falls under the category of a desktop. There are only two categories that differentiate them, they are Mobile (tablet, phone, phablet, surface, and any kind of mobile device) and Desktop ( PC, Mac, laptop, All in one ).
Since your device belong to both Desktop (eg. laptop) and Mobile (Touch features), then it’s Hybrid.
Again, hover doesn’t work on touch devices. I checked Ubermenu and it doesn’t respond with hover when displayed on touch enabled device.
And what if your visitor has touch device that is larger than 480px? Like tablets, surface, retina devices. Those even surpass the resolution of a desktop. That’s why it’s harder to detect which is mobile and desktop.
For example,
A tablet has 1024px resolution with touch feature
A 11″ laptop has 1024px resolution with touch feature
The question is, how the code will differentiate which is a tablet and which is a laptop when they have both 1024px and touch feature. We can’t enforce 480px since there are too many devices, we’re trying to cover all devices as much as possible. Hybrid is on our list too but we don’t have any clear view about it yet. I love to provide a solution, but unfortunately, I can’t. I’ll forward this our conversation to our developer for more insights.
Thanks!

LeannaParticipantOk so the final word is, X Theme Menu does not work on hybrid laptops (normal laptop having touch screen functionality), though almost all the modern laptops are now touchscreen. This is hard for me to believe, as it makes X Themes Menu worthless, since dropdown on hover is standard expectation of anyone using a laptop/desktop. Moreover, Ubermenu works fine on my hybrid which tells us that SOMEBODY has the solution. So apparently X Theme’s menu needs URGENT upgrade to accomodate hybrid laptops.
I appreciate all your efforts above but you really haven’t yet addressed the fact that Ubermenu works on hybrid while X Theme Menu doesn’t. I was really hoping to get rid of Ubermenu and go to just X Theme menu and would love to understand why Ubermenu works and X Theme menu doesnt.

RadModeratorHi there,
X menu should work on a hybrid, but not the functionality related to hover/pointer. As you may see, dropdown has to manually click to expand on a touchscreen. I already forwarded this thread, I may be wrong, but it’s been months or year and we’re still looking the best way to handle hybrid devices. I myself like to find the solution too, stay tuned.

Handling hover states ¶
Touchscreens (currently) can’t convey hover states, so it’d be nice to adjust our UI for touchscreens so that they can still get around.
Of course a keyboard can’t hover either. It’s probably just best to avoid relying on hover states in the first place – use them for embellishments.
Thanks for understanding.

LeannaParticipantThank you. I’ll delay my hope of ditching Ubermenu until X fixes this.
