I have a site on Enfold I need to move to X – what will happen to the portfolio items in Enfold?
Will they become X portfolio items?
Will they vanish?Should I copy them before I move to X in case they dissapear?

They should work just fine, you can test it, install X and activate it, if there is something that does not work you can go to Appereance > Themes and switch back to your old theme.

They are all built with a visual composer that looks specific to Enfold, it’s not in the plugins list.

Unfortunately, there’s no straightforward transition. X portfolio items is a custom post type and I cannot speak for enfolds. They might also be custom post type but then they will not be carry over as X portfolio item. They might have different setup in the database. The best thing to do here is to setup a development site first and then move contents bit by bit. As you said, they are build using visual composer that is tailored for enfold, so there are settings that will not be available when you use X theme. It would be best to build the portfolio items again. Hope this helps.
