    Apologies as I know this must be a really stupid question.
    I can see from other forum posts that for various things I want to do I will need to edit the php file in my child theme but I cannot work out where to find it.

    I have installed the child theme and already done some basic customisation to it, how do I access the php file to edit it to do more complex things (like adding “read more” functionality to pages)? I’m using a mac – do I access the php file via the wordpress dashboard (can’t see an option to find this) or in the OSX Finder? I’m just confused as I’ve already uploaded the child theme to wordpress and activated it, so I’m assuming I’ll need to make changes there rather than in the version that’s saved onto my mac (i.e. the version on finder).

    I know this is probably a really silly question, sorry, I’m finding it hard to get my head around everything!

    Hi There,

    Thanks for writing in! Basically by default child theme is blank theme that for you to create your own templates/customisation without losing the functions from the parent theme (x).

    Wordpress codex will explain this better, please follow this post: https://codex.wordpress.org/Child_Themes

    You can access your theme files via Appearance > Editor. But we do not recommended that because if you mess in there you wont be able to access your dashboard anymore unless you correct the error via FTP.

    So we recommend you access your child theme files via FTP and edit it with a text editor application (e.g. notepad++, sublime, etc.)

    Thanks Friech,

    So, just to check my understanding:

    1. I contact my host provider to get my FTP credentials
    2. Do I ask them to SEND me the .php files, so I can edit them and send them back, or does the FTP somehow give me the ability to access them?

    Ignore me – just found some guidelines on my host’s site, downloaded filezilla and found them 🙂
