    Hello,

I could not find an answer to this question, but if it exists I apologize for the duplication- please feel free to just link me to the answer. I am very new to using X and finding it quite different from my previous WP experiences (in a good way, just a learning curve!). I have been working my way through the documentation in the Knowledge Base and would like some clarification regarding child themes.

I do not plan to make any changes or customizations to the CSS/js except possibly some of the built in shortcodes. I will be building the page using the existing functionality in Cornerstone and Customizer. Do I still need to use a child theme to protect for updates? If so, does a child theme have to be updated as well or does it automatically incorporate the updated functionality of the main theme? I haven’t gotten too far in structuring the site yet so I want to make sure I install the child theme now if I’m going to need it!

    Thank you for your help!

    Hi there,

Thanks for writing in! To add custom CSS/JS you don’t need to setup Child Theme because you can place them through Customize > Custom. Child Theme is necessary when you need something out of the box that needs template change, mostly PHP code. So if you think you might need to change some template structure/content then you need Child Theme.

    Hope this makes sense.

    Cheers!

    Hi Rupok,

Thanks for the quick reply. Just to clarify (please forgive my ignorance), I basically wouldn’t need this unless I was tinkering around with “developer level” changes? So anything I’m doing through Customizer, Cornerstone, and shortcodes within the theme is safe without a child theme?

    Thanks again,

    K

    Hi there,

You got it correctly. Child theme’s will be used to extend the existing functionality of the template files. You can ignore it as long as you don’t want to add such functionality.

    Thanks!
