    i have added the x-child theme, and did a few things there in the style sheet. and that is fine.
    i noticed for a bit that the slider navigation had stopped using arrows, but instead some sort of shortcode?
    but in any case, then the customizer stopped working entirely – even if i deactivate the child theme.
    all that is now happening is the X is rotating.
    steps that i have taken included ensuring 256M memory is there and available
    after adding code to the wp config file.
    ( that was checked by viewing the backupbuddy settings)
    snapshot included of console settings from firebug.
    latest release of all plugins and wp and cornerstone etc.

    update – if i deactivate the wp editor ( one of my favorites) it started working again.
    so it is resolved.
