It seems like it should be a lot easier to create a sidebar and have it appear on all product, product category, and shop pages. It is quite buggy to do this though. For one the only product categories that show at the bottom of the taxonomy box are the ones with products in them, so if a complete taxonomy is created with empty categories you have to remember to add those categories when a product is finally there. Also when a new category is created then one has to remember to add it to the sidebar, this is not a good process. There should be a selection for posts types so products can be chosen and for product category pages either include in the shop selection or as an option shouldn’t there? It’s nice to have the resolution to a certain category but also if I want see the cart widget and not a list of recent blogs entries on all product category pages then a whole lot of overhead is needed and this doesn’t seem like it’s going to work in a lot of situations.
