When creating a post, I paste a snippet of code and then hit the code button in the editing and it looks like it highlights each line individually. Is there a way around this. I essentially want the code block highlighted specifically.

Thanks for writing in! It looks like you paste your code directly on the WordPress editor? So each line of code you have is on its own
<p>tag.Please paste your code to a text editor first (notepad++, sublime, etc.) and then wrap it with the
[x_code]shortcode.e.g.
