I’m a photographer and a PR/Strategic Communications pro – not a developer or coder – and I’m on my fourth WordPress installation. I’ve installed and activated the X Child theme, thinking this is the safe route in the event my theme needs to be modified in the future.

On the child themes how-to page, the instructions say there’s some work to do in the directory, main CSS file and functions.php. It ends saying all the heavy lifting is already done, which requires none of the setup listed above.

So, which is it? I’m not comfortable digging around the directories, CSS or php files without some serious help. I know my limits.

Am I good to go, having simply installed and activated the Child, or is there more work to do?

    Thanks for any insights.

“Setting up a child theme actually takes a little bit of work as you need to create a new directory for the child theme, specify the parent theme so WordPress knows where to apply the new changes, enqueue the parent theme’s main CSS file, et cetera. You might also want to setup a functions.php file for various pieces of functionality that you want to add or modify. Fortunately, we’ve done all the heavy lifting for you in this area and all you need to do is use our provided child theme, which requires none of the setup listed above.”
