I just found out about child themes. Currently, I don’t have the X child theme installed in WordPress. I’m putting together a small business site and was wondering if installing the child theme is something I should do. What exactly is the child theme used for and what would I do with it? I am finally getting the site to look exactly as I want it to and don’t want to mess anything up by installing a child theme, is that something that could happen or would the main X theme I have installed remain unharmed? Thanks everyone for your help.

One of the main benefit of having child theme is that inherits all functionality and design of the X theme. When a theme update is available, it will be applied on the main X theme. The changes you made on the child theme will be intact.
