Worked on a website for a client and used an old zip file to start working. Now the client wants the site so I bought a license to receive updates and of course to support you guys. However, I can’t activate my install because the old install is still asking for an API key but the new way of validating is apparently not done with the API key anymore.

I’m very reluctant to unpack X and upload it via FTP since we used quite the amount of custom code. Is there any way to fix this or to generate an API key after all?

    Hi There,

Have you made the Custom Code on your Child Theme?

If yes. No problems just update the theme via FTP and your custom code will remain untouched.

But you will need to perform a Child Theme Update:

    https://community.theme.co/forums/topic/child-theme-updates/

If you your Custom Code was made in Customizer, also no problems.

If you made a Custom Code inside Core Theme Files, you will need to to setup a Child Theme and Transfer this custom code to a Child theme. Than Perform a manual update and than register.

Here’s the best way to go about editing files with child theme :

    1. Install, activate and setup the child theme.
    2. Copy the php and css files from the main theme which you intend to edit and make changes.
    3. Make all the changes into the new copied files which now exists under your child theme.
    4. No need to copy them back to the main theme directory.

By doing this, when you update your theme to a new version, the theme will of course get updated but the files in the child theme will remain unchanged and the edits will not go away after the update.

In order to perform a manual upgrade you will need:

    1. Temporary disable any caching plugins and purge all your server cache.

    2. Delete both X theme (/wp-content/themes/x) and Cornerstone plugin (/wp-content/plugins/cornerstone) by connecting to your FTP (your settings will be saved in the database)

    3. Download the latest copy of X and upload it to your themes folder via FTP OR you can upload the x.zip via Appearance -> Themes section.

    4. Latest version of Cornerstone will be installed automatically when you head over X Addons section. Now you try validating your X theme again and then try to install any other extension and it should function properly.

Let us know how if you have any questions,

*** We do recommend you performing a backup of your website before doing this.

    Thanks

    Joao
