Hi, I’m preparing a bilingual site (Spanish/English) for our Fellowship of churches. We’re updating from the current setup, which does not use WordPress. My question is: Do I need two licenses and two separate WordPress installations, or is there a way to use multi-site or separate directories, etc? Any help will be appreciated. This is the current site (remember, it’s not based on x yet!): http://iglesiant.org/

You don’t need to buy a new license for the other language nor multisite directories.

Thank you for your kind answer.
I have no problem at all with translating WordPress or x-theme, as a matter of fact, I develop first in Spanish and then port to English. And it’s not just translating the articles, etc. On the English website, everything must be in English (nav, header, even logo…) Someone on another post suggested a subdirectory with the contents of the other language. I think I’ll try to do that and let you know.

Sorry for taking so long to get back to this conversation. I only dedicate part-time to web design and development… I now think I’m going with the multisite installation for my bilingual website needs, but I have searched the forum and have a question for you.

Currently, my testing site is http://x.iglesiant.org/, which will finally become http://iglesiant.org/. I have no problem with that, since I have AllInOne WP Migration plugin and believe the transfer can be achieved with no problems, changing my license to the new domain.

However, the English version of the website makes me wonder if we’ll need another license. It would be installed on the server as a sub-folder of the main site as this: http://iglesiant.org/clm/, but I have a redirection from the subdomain http://clm.iglesiant.org (pointing to the sub-folder). Will this mean that I would need another license for the subdomain redirect? I would like to keep the redirect with the only purpose being to make it easier to write for end users…

Hi Carlos,

If the URL is just a subfolder under the same domain then there is not need to have a separate license for it but it is a different care for sub domains since they are considered are different URLS.

Since your site is a bilingual single, have you considered looking into some third party plugins that makes your setup easier? These plugins normally include a language switcher where you could switch from one language to another under the same site.

Hello, again:

I’ve been looking at several alternatives for multilingual editing (WPGlobus, Polylang, Multisite Language Switcher, etc.) and, maybe I’m wrong, there seems to be no way to use these with Cornerstone. Am I right? I would greatly like to use the Cornerstone features already implemented on my Spanish version site…

Hi there,

They will work with cornerstone unless you have the special feature that you wish to see in cornerstone along with those plugins? Please note that even without cornerstone, you still need to manually translate the content and copy and pasting is unavoidable. These are no automatic translation on page contents. The only difference in cornerstone is you’ll have to export and import the content instead of copy and pasting it. Then do the manual translation. I recommend WPML as it supports duplication, still if it fails, you can still do the cornerstone’s export/import.
