Please try testing for a plugin conflict. You can do this by deactivating all third party plugins, and seeing if the problem remains. If it’s fixed, you’ll know a plugin caused the problem, and you can narrow down which one by reactivating them one at a time.

quinexParticipantwell… it worked just fine all the time, but just after updating theme it did not send the mail anymore

If you don’t receive email notifications, most probably it could be due to a hosting related issue. Depending on spam or white-list settings on your mail servers, this could prevent you from receiving the emails. You can try using another email provider’s email account to see if you get the email notification (Eg: Gmail) and also check your SPAM folder in your email account.
Alternatively you can setup a SMTP server to send your emails which you can do that using these plugins:
