I have installed the child’s theme and activated it I’m just wondering on all of the technical things because I’m a new beginner but I have read the entire well illustrated support form on how to install the child’s theme and I’ve installed it first and activated it but now I’m wondering about am also supposed to activate the regular X-theme so that I can do future updates to my WordPress I just really want to get this right the first time thank you for your help in advance

No, you can’t activate parent and child at the same time. A child theme is a theme that inherits the functionality of another theme, called the parent theme. Child themes allows you to modify, or add to the functionality of that parent theme instead of modifying the core theme files directly. It doesn’t matter if you activate parent theme or child theme.
