Unable to validate API Key

I keep getting the following error when I try to enter my API key:

Could not establish connection. Please ensure your firewall is not blocking requests to theme.co

Hi Karen,

Thanks for writing in! As mentioned in the error description, you need to make sure that your server is not blocking any requests to theme.co server. Please check our detailed guide on how to troubleshoot validation related connection issues (https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/troubleshooting-validation-connection-issues/201).

Also it is important to use the latest X/Pro themes, by the time you’re validating your site. Our product validation guide is available here (https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/setup-product-validation/55).

If you’re still having issues, please provide us with your WordPress login credentials in a secure note to check your issue further.

Thanks!

Hi Karen,

Upon checking your site, I see that you’re using an older version of X theme (4.0.6) and Cornerstone plugin (1.0.5). When you have missed few major updates, our validation process will not be initiated correctly. You can see the latest version information from here (https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/troubleshooting-version-compatibility/195).

So in this case, the best option would be to download the latest version of X theme from your Themeforest account, then delete your current version of X theme and Cornerstone plugins (your current settings and data will be saved in the database, so you can safely delete), then re-install the latest versions and then, you should be able to validate your theme.

Since you’re using fairly older versions, I would suggest you to take a full backup of your site before updating.

Let us know how it goes.
Thanks!

Greetings! I note there are help articles regarding child themes:

https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/setup-how-to-setup-child-themes/57, and a follow-up comment in the forum:
https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/adding-child-theme-after-making-significant-changes/367/4

This website was apparently never set up on a child theme, and presumably has experienced significant parent theme changes over the years. So the challenge is evident: how best to transition to a child theme at this stage, if at all possible.

I look forward to your recommendations as to next steps.

Hi Tom,

Our child theme setup guide is straight forward and you can setup a child theme by following that link and also check customization best practices guide on your shared link which explained how you can perform customizations.

If you haven’t done any customizations to your X theme template files directly, you can simply install and activate your child theme without any issues. If you have edited one of your template files already, you need to copy those template files into your child theme, in order to function it correctly.

Hope that’s clear.
Thanks!
