Portfolio vs. Blog Post

Hello, I’m trying to figure out the best way to display projects, but can’t seem to figure out what the differences are between blog ‘Posts’ and ‘Portfolio Items’, even after reading 3 of your articles / forum posts: https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/features-portfolios/98
i) https://theme.co/apex/forums/topic/portfolio-pages-vs-items-vs-posts/
ii) https://theme.co/apex/forums/topic/posts-vs-portfolio-items-and-how-to-get-them-to-appear-on-the-right-pages/
iii) https://theme.co/apex/forums/topic/posts-vs-portfolio-items-and-how-to-get-them-to-appear-on-the-right-pages/

So far, I’ve created the projects as ‘blog posts’ entitled “Projects” in the main menu, but prefer the way ‘Portfolio’ displays filtered posts by category:

As an experiment, I decided to try using the ‘Portfolio’ feature, and re-created the projects as ‘Portfolio Items’. However, when editing a Portfolio Item, the “Pro” builder tab is not available; only ‘Visual’ and ‘Text’ tabs are displayed (see screen capture below):

Is there a way to use the Pro builder to lay out elements within a ‘Portfolio Item’ page as I have done on this page (which is actually a blog post): http://terracana.priscillathen.com/2016/06/22/hells-gate-slide-remediation/ ?
Or are we forced to use the “old way” of doing things, which displays all elements ( images and text) stacked vertically in 1 single column?

It’s important that I be able to create columns for text and photos as on the blog page:

Any clarification would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi There,

Blog post and Portfolio item have different set of design per stack. We can check blog post and portfolio item design per stack here: https://theme.co/x/demos/.

Pro builder is not available by default on Portfolio. See this screencast on how to enable it on: https://screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cbie6Nllkm

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick response, and for the video tutorial also! I’m so glad to know that the Pro builder is available for Portfolio items! Some follow up questions…

  1. It seems that the only real difference between a Blog Post and Portfolio Item is that the Portfolio index page has a drop-down menu filter (which is really cool btw), whereas for the Blog Post, the only way to see posts within a specific category is to actually find the tag underneath a blog post, and click on it, is that correct?

  2. If the Blog index page has a section for “Latest Posts” in the side column (ex. http://demo.theme.co/renew-6/blog/), then does the main content area not display the posts in reverse chronological order (ie. showing the most recent posts)?

  3. I created a portfolio item, but it is not appearing on the Portfolio index page: http://terracana.priscillathen.com/portfolio/ (you’ll see it’s just a blank index). What am I doing wrong?

  4. Is there a way to disable the “Author” name from showing to the public?

  5. How can I add content (simple text & images) to the column’s right side (before the social share buttons)? I want to move the text that says “Specifications” into the side column on the right.

Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hello Priscilla,

You’re always welcome!

1.) You’re correct. Blog post is default to wordpress. Portfolio is a custom post type added by the theme together with it’s functionalities.

2.) By default wordpress always shows the most recent post. See this option to filter or control the content of recent post element: http://demo.theme.co/integrity-1/shortcodes/recent-posts/ that is used on the sidebar to avoid duplicates.

3.) Edit portfolio index page and then try to hit save again. Check after that.

4.) Yes, we can use CSS to hide the elements you want to be hidden.

5.) I don’t see social share buttons at the moment on portfolio item page. Do you mean sidebar? The sidebar content is controlled on Appearance > Widgets. It is not per post basis. What you add there will be available on every sidebar of every post.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Lily for your reply. I will respond to your answers above in the same order:

  1. Good to know that I finally figured out the difference between blog posts and portfolio items!

  2. Noted. I will check out the short codes once I have enough content to create more posts, hopefully in the next week or so.

  3. When you say to edit the portfolio page then hit save, I wasn’t sure if you meant making modifications to Wordpress or the Pro builder, so I have tried modifying/saving both, but the portfolio item is still not showing on the index Portfolio page, if you go to the link you’ll see what I mean: http://terracana.priscillathen.com/portfolio/

  4. Awesome… hiding it through CSS worked (thanks)!

  5. If you go to the portfolio item: http://terracana.priscillathen.com/portfolio-item/hells-gate-slide-remediation/, you’ll see the social share buttons. I know you’re saying that the side bar will appear on every page, but is there a way to edit this, so that the custom text will be in this same column? The info in this text field (“Specifications”) is so short that it would be such an inefficient use of space in the main content area; it would be perfect info to display in the right side bar (above “Share this project”). I hope that there’s a creative solution to this! Your expertise would be greatly appreciated!

Hey @Priscilla,

Thanks for updating in!

3.) I have checked your portfolio page and not a single item is displayed. It could be that there are no portfolio items yet or that you may have filtered out using a category which portfolio item will display and yet no item yet is assigned to that category/ies. Please check your Portfolio Settings. For more information, please check this link: https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/features-portfolios/98

5.) You cannot edit the sidebar using Cornerstone. If you wish to edit it, it can only be done with custom development. Regretfully this would be outside the scope of support we can offer. You may wish to consult a developer to assist you with this. X is quite extensible with child themes, so there are plenty of possibilities.

Thanks for understanding. Take care!

Thanks for the reply RueNel.

  1. I did have a couple portfolio items uploaded and assigned the correct category, but they weren’t showing. I reviewed the article you gave me tried selection “All Categories”, and that has done the trick:

  2. That’s too bad that we cannot insert simple text and images in the right side bar – it’s a lot of extra space that’s not being used (waste of screen “real estate”). Would it be possible to make this a feature request in future version of X Theme?

Hello There,

Thanks for updating in!

3.) Great! It’s good to know that it has worked for you.

5.)Your feedback has been noted. This is something we can add to our list of feature requests. This way it can be taken into consideration for future development. All of these items are discussed with our team internally and prioritized based on the amount of interest a particular feature might receive.

Thanks!

Wonderful! Hopefully there’ll be other people making the same request. Thank you.

Hi @Priscilla,

Yes, will keep this thread open and so that others will see this requests.

Feel free to ask us again.

Thanks.
