I’ve used the template in the footer called ‘mail’ but the contact form doesn’t let you type your own info into it. Apologies if this is a stupid question but I only edited the text in the template but people are not able to type into it.

Where did you get the Mail template. I have check in our local test server and it does not exist. You may have gotten it somewhere else. Actually it is not a contact form. It just a placeholder texts and a button that looks like a contact form. This is why you cannot click it and be able to insert any text in it.
Please go to Pro > Validation > Extensions and install Email Forms plugin. To know more about this plugin, please check this out:
