Unknown character in post archive excerpt with The Grid

Hi!

I thought this “unknown character” was a WPML issue, but they say it’s the Grid. That letter is an Ä which is seen fine earlier in the same excerpt. Why does it look like this?

All tables in the database are utf8mb4_unicode_ci or utf8_general_ci, wp-config.php is utf-8.
All that is looking OK, my web hotel says.

Hi @Lobsterass,

Thank you for writing in, did you upgrade your database recently? That usually happens when a database changes occurred. Please try the solution provided here.

Hope it helps,
Cheers!

Hi!

No, that spread the problem to everywhere on the site.

Hey Lobsterass,

Though this issue happens in The Grid display, this doesn’t necessarily mean it’s the cause of the issue. This is highly likely a mismatch in character encoding configuration that’s why Friech referred you to the article.

If the article didn’t help, which should also be expected, you would need to try other DB_CHARSET values.

You also need to experiment with other database encoding. It could happen that changing the encoding using PHPMyAdmin won’t take effect though so ultimately, it is your web host that could fix this issue because they have control over the database.

Thank you for understanding.

OK, I’ll ask them again then. Thanx!

You are most welcome!
