Hello, I’ve read through the knowledgebase article in relation to speed and optimizing. I’ve done everything seemingly that I can do based on the recommendations. Here are the steps I’ve taken so far

-Enabled GZip Compression on the server
    -Specify expires headers
-Gone through every image one by one to maximize the compression and shrink their size
-Gone through all the plugins and deleted all except the bare minimum
-Upgraded my hosting from shared to VPS

I cannot enable a caching plugin unfortunately as my WordPress site uses the default permalink structure and changing this would be problematic. So I’m stuck with the default permalink structure as well as not being able to run a caching plugin.

All of the improvements listed above greatly improved my pagespeed scores and reduced requests, as well as the sizes of the pages to load. There are a couple of items that are listed in my reports to change that I believe from my understanding I cannot change as they are just how X Theme functions. These items included

    1. Serve Scaled Images (It’s my understanding that since X dynamically adjusts the images to fit, this cannot be fixed)
    2. Specify Image Dimensions (Again, because of the dynamic nature of X adjusting image sizes, this cannot be fixed)
    3. Defer parsing of Javascript (I don’t think I can change this as it’s part of the code for X to function?)
    4. Remove query strings from static resources (I’m not sure on this one)

The site seems to load fine on a desktop/laptop with broadband internet speeds. However the mobile version of the site seems to stall out when I open it on a phone over 3G, or even over Wifi. It would seem like it should be the same over wifi as my laptop would since the speeds are the same, but the switch to the mobile layout seems to cause the site to stall and lockup when viewed on a smartphone, be it Android or iOS.

I’m mostly trying to figure out what direction to go to fix the issue with mobile as the site locking up on mobile is a bit of a problem. I do plan to add a CDN like MaxCDN to improve that aspect of things, but I still feel like there is some underlying issue when the site is being viewed on a phone or mobile that causes it to lockup, and I’d like to try and fix that issue first, but I’m not exactly sure what to look for to try and fix it and was hoping there was something in X and wordpress that I could tweak to fix my mobile issue.

    Thanks

    Wordpress 4.4.2
    X Version 4.3.1
    Cornerstone 1.2.3
(For some reason I don’t see the option to update from inside of WordPress, I’ll have to figure that out, I didn’t think it really mattered a lot since my mobile issue predates the updates, but feel free to tell me if I’m wrong)

    Hi there,

Thanks for writing in! We already put all possible ways to to Performance article so that you could follow this to optimize your site.

So if you need to optimize this more then it would be out of our support scope because it’s not really a theme feature. As stated on our sidebar –

Support covers getting setup, theme features, and bug fixes. Regretfully we cannot provide support for 3rd party plugins or scripts.

    Thanks for understanding.

Thank you for the follow up. I understand on the speed issues, it sounds like I’ve done everything I can do based on the performance article and the steps in it. I’ll work on the CDN and see what gains I can make there.

In regards to the issue on mobile though, it feels like that this is something that is related to X theme, as the previous theme that I had did not have this issue. Currently if I view the site on a desktop, with the site in desktop mode, it loads just fine and navigation is not a problem. However when I view on a mobile device and the site loads in mobile view, everything freezes and the site is unresponsive and does not accept inputs. Could you have a look and see if there is something happening when the site is being loaded in mobile view that is causing it to freeze and become unresponsive?

    Thanks

    Hi There,

Would you mind sharing us your admin credentials to further check your setup. Don’t forget to set it as private reply.

Please test for plugin conflict also because I could see a errors occuring in your setup. You can do this by deactivating all third party plugins, and seeing if the problem remains. If it’s fixed, you’ll know a plugin caused the problem, and you can narrow down which one by reactivating them one at a time.

Let us know how it goes.

    Thanks.

    Hi there,

What mobile or device you’re testing this on? I checked it on my phone but it’s working smoothly. There is no freezing, inputs are responsive. Though, quite slow on the first load since it’s my first visit to your site. The second load works fine.

    Thanks!

I’ve mostly used a Moto X (2nd Gen), running Lollipop. I’ve tested on 3 different mobile browsers and found the following results

Chrome- Page loading time okay, can scroll on page, hitting menu button locks up site, menu doesn’t open, no inputs accepted
Opera- Page loading time okay, can scroll on page, hitting menu button locks up site, menu doesn’t open, no inputs accepted (Opera pops up a dialog box saying “page is unresponsive, do you want to close it or wait”)
Firefox- Page loading time okay, can scroll on page, menu will open when hitting button, scrolling somewhat laggy, but inputs accepted

It seems like the site will load, although a little slowly, but I’m not too worried about that, the real issue is that the site locks up when you try and hit the menu button, or the slider buttons, etc. I’m not sure what is causing it to lockup though, but it only seems to happen when the site is in mobile mode. I can try and borrow some other people’s phones to see if I can replicate on other devices.

    Thanks

Wanted to add another update, I’ve borrowed a couple of different phones to test as well, the results have been the same. I tried loading the site on the following phones

    Moto X (1st Gen) Lollipop
Moto G (1st Gen) Kit Kat I think
    Samsung S6

All of these phones exhibit the same condition, where the site will load, albeit a little slowly, but when you press the menu button the site freezes and doesn’t respond.

    Thanks

    Hi there,

Hmm, I’ll see if I can test it with those devices. Though, I checked it my devices including windows phone and not getting that issue. Got S5 and Note2 Kitkat/JellyBean and no problem with locking when clicking the menu. Tested on Chrome, Firefox, Opera and stock browsers. There should be no differences across devices since the software is just the same.

Stay tuned, I’ll see what I can do.

    Thanks!

    Thank you! Appreciate it!

I managed to also get my hands on a Galaxy Tab and ran into the same issue, where the site froze/stuttered after hitting the menu button. I’ll wait to hear what you come up with.

    Thanks!

    Hi there,

Sure, will check on it. Already tried on a tablet, but no issues with menu locking. Would you mind providing a screen recording, maybe I’m just looking on different area.

    Thanks!

    Hello,

I went through and made a screen recording of using the site on mobile, and the issue I’m running into with the freezing. As you can see in the video the site works when I go to the home page and scroll up and down, but as soon as I hit the menu button everything freezes, and then the site no longer accepts inputs. I stopped recording after a little over a minute. Usually the site stays frozen or the tab times out and Chrome wants to kill it as unresponsive. Sometimes though after a minute the menu will pop up, but additional inputs seem to cause it to freeze again.

    Hi there,

Yes, I can see that from your screenshot. Though, I can’t replicate it on my devices. Looks like related to some javascript that’s looping that causes freeze and memory leak.

    Though, I’ll keep on checking.

    Thanks!
