I don’t HAVE to use the logo in that space – but I want the header to display in full size and I just can’t figure out how to achieve this.For an example of what I am TRYING to do, please look at http://www.rayhigdon.com – when you view on smaller screens it shrinks down a bit and for the most part works. that’s what i am trying to accomplish with mine.
if i have to put the logo up in the top bar area, that would be ok too – but I still need help getting the image with my face on it to display at the right size.

I’m sorry. I just read what I wrote again and I was distracted by children while writing that! I’m very sorry!
Here’s the bottom-line of what I want to be able to do.
In the header settings in customizer (renew stack) – I only get options to put a logo in that area as opposed to a logo in a spot and if I choose to have a header that does not include my logo, then I have to choose the stacked option and put my logo in the top bar and my header below that or vice versa.
In addition to that – when I upload my logo in the area provided in customizer, it is tiny. I have to tell customizer that it’s twice as wide as it really is so that it will display at the correct size.

It is because of your logo image resolution and the spacing between the images inside the logo, it is not clear when viewing on small devices. How about adding a different logo for mobile view ? Please follow this post (https://community.theme.co/forums/topic/different-logo-for-mobile/#post-833037).
