Theme update: Ftp vs delete then zip upload?
Question 1: about FTP update
Hi, one way to update theme is via ftp
But your theme has more than 600 files, and it takes ~20 minutes on godaddy managed wordpress to upload them one by one via filezilla. (no option to upload zip and extract in a second, because they’re not giving cpanel access. and if i try to install new zipfile theme via dashboard, it says theme already instead.)My question is, what if I did following:
-delete the parent theme-x from dashboard (like how we “uninstall” a theme)
-upload the new version zip file via dashboard=>theme (like how we install a new theme). My doubt is- if I do above steps, it may even delete the ‘settings’ in my both parent and child theme.
Please Enlighten.Question 2: about authentication
Yes I’ve purchased the theme and I’m yet to authenticate it.My question is- IF I authenticate the theme, will it be able to update from dashboard (like those free themes?) because earlier I read your knowledge base and it said, this ‘authentication’ will only alert you when update is available then you’ve to FTP.

Thank you for writing in!
#1: First, I’d recommend creating a backup of your site. After that, you can delete the theme from dashboard and upload the .zip file in it. The Customizer’s settings are stored in database so the update won’t effect it.
If you’re using a child theme, you can simply delete the parent X theme and upload the latest version. It will work like how the FTP works.
You can also export your Customizer’s settings before updating the theme so that if you find anything missing from the Customizer after the update, you can import the settings back.
#2: Validating the theme will notify you whenever a new update comes as well as you can directly update your theme and bundled plugins from your WordPress admin panel. You won’t be needing to use FTP or any other method after validating your theme.
Hope this helps. 🙂
Thank you.
July 3, 2015 at 6:01 am #320105I’d like to update my theme the same way – uninstalling and downloading it again, but I’m confused about a few things:
1. I am currently using a child theme. But when I click on the x-theme, there is no option to delete. Why is that?
2. In the most recent x update, I got a notification and I went ahead and updated my theme. So why would I need to go through an ftp or an uninstall and reinstall process if its already been updated? There was no real change after the update though so I’m very confused about the whole thing.
Please help!
July 3, 2015 at 2:08 pm #320385Hi again,
1. You’ll need to switch to any other theme (Other than X – switch to Twenty Fifteen theme) to delete the X theme via Dashboard.
2. Yes, automatic updates are enabled when you validate the X theme. once it’s enabled you don’t need to update the theme manually via FTP you can simply update it via Dashboard.
From which version you updated the theme? I suggest that you review the changelog in order to get the idea what’s new in the latest version of theme. Here is the link of changelog https://theme.co/changelog/
Hope this helps!
July 6, 2015 at 8:40 am #322225As per point 2, if the theme updates automatically, and mine says it has, how come I don’t see any of the changes in the changelog? For instance I still don’t have the rev slider as an element in cornerstone.
And if I were to switch to another theme, wouldn’t that affect all my pages once I switch back to x?
