Hi, the theme needs updating on a site I’m working on, but as I knew little about WordPress and Child Themes, I thought it would be far too complicated and just got on with building it! I’ve customised the site quite a bit and have read that if you go to ‘Customizer Manager’ in the Dashboard and Export the Customizer Settings, then after doing the update I can then import the file with the settings back in. Before doing this, I just wanted to make sure that it will work 100% as I’ve spent many hours designing and working on the site! I wondered if it was an option to install the child theme now, or will that wipe out everything I’ve done anyway? Sorry, I’m fairly new to all this and have no idea how child themes really work so I thought I’d play it safe and ignore it, but now there’s an update available to the theme, I’m concerned my customised settings will be lost.
Hope that all makes sense!
Thanks!
April 7, 2016 at 7:46 am #871085Hi there,
Thanks for writing in!
After reading your post, it seems that you have made the changes only in the Customizer. If so, your changes won’t be affected by the update because Customizer settings are stored in the database. You can also install a child theme now, but it’s only important if you want to make the template customization. You can find more detail on child theme in this article: https://community.theme.co/kb/how-to-setup-child-themes/
Even though theme or plugin updates doesn’t affect the Customizer settings, it is recommended to backup your site before updating so you have a backup to restore from if something goes wrong.
Please let us know if we can help you with anything else. 🙂
Thank you!
April 7, 2016 at 7:55 am #871097Hi, thanks for getting back to me so quick! I think I’m confused with the template customization and the customizer settings! I’ll have to read up more about it to see what the difference is.
Thanks!
April 7, 2016 at 6:31 pm #872058Hi there,
Template customization means, you directly edit a theme file using a text editor and place your own customization code into those files. Basically this method is heavily used by advanced users or developers.
Hope that’s clear.
April 8, 2016 at 3:05 am #872473Thanks for explaining that. I think it’ll be a while yet til I’ll be considered an advanced user so I’ll stick to the customiser manager for now!
Many thanks for your help!
