Smashing PixelsParticipantHello
I have inherited control of a site that is running X theme 4.0.3 on WordPress 4.2.12 (PHP 5.6). For obvious reasons I would like to update this site, both the theme and the WordPress version.
Is there a best-practices for updating such an old version of the the theme, i.e do I go version by version and check for issues? Is there a reference for which versions of X work with which version(s) of WordPress? I did examine the changelog but it is very, very long when all versions since 4.0.3 are taken into account and is a bit overwhelming.
Any advice would be appreciated.

DarshanaModeratorHi there,
Thanks for writing in! Please refer to our knowledge base section (https://community.theme.co/kb/version-compatibility/), where you can find all the version numbers of latest X theme and compatible plugin version numbers.
Hope that helps.

Smashing PixelsParticipantThank you for the reply, however the article does not help. It is simply a list of the current compatibility and makes no reference to updating from an earlier version.
Since this is a live site, my concern is that if I try to update from X theme 4.0.3 to X theme 4.6.4 that the site will no longer work as expected. While researching this issue on your forums I saw many, many posts about the updates breaking things and having issues with Cornerstone, etc. So the question remains, is their a best practices for such an update process from version 4.0.3?
As I wish to update a live site I was hoping for a more detailed answer to potential issues related to such an upgrade, if this is at all possible.
Thank you.

JoaoModeratorHi There,
When skipping versions, like it is your case, it is possible issues come up, usually they are easy fix issues, unless there is a third party plugin update that causes the issue.
My reccomendation would be to update.
But first do a backup of your website, you can use All in On Migration for that or do the backup at your hosting provider.
Remember to update your Child Theme as well if you are using it.

You are not skipping that many versions, I believe your update will be ok.
You can update using WordPress dashboard or
Access WP Admin Dashboard Addons and revoke your license
Access your site via FTP remove Cornerstone from wp-content/plugins
Access wp-content/themes remove X and upload a new version
Access Addons validate it again
Let us know if you need further assistance.
Cheers
