PyanfarParticipantAfter udpating last week to Ubermenu 3.2.6 the items under column heads in my submenus are fanning out with multiple sub-items per row instead of one sub-item per row.
If you hover on any top level item with a submenu, you will see the issue. I have been through all the documentation looking for any setting that controls this, but SevenSpark’s documentation doesn’t say any setting is necessary. They sub items ought to be lining up in columns with one item per row automatically.
So far I’ve:
- Reset the control panel to default settings, reset the CSS to default and then deleted the plugin completely. I made sure the plugin folder was deleted from the server. Upon reinstallation the default template for menu items was still resident somewhere as every item I added had previous custom-default settings (e.g. my color settings), so my attempt to start over was not completely successful.
- Cleared all caches, turned off caching
- After deleting and reinstalling, I rebuilt the menu from scratch, but the issue persists.
- Experiments to try to force any kind of change to the display in terms of columns don’t work. Changing from “native” to “automatic” to “full-width” changes nothing except how wide the display is. The sub items still display multiple items to a row.
Any ideas?

JoaoModeratorHi There,
You could try testing for a plugin conflict. You can do this by deactivating all third party plugins, and seeing if the problem remains. If it’s fixed, you’ll know a plugin caused the problem, and you can narrow down which one by reactivating them one at a time.
If that does not work, please provide your WP Admin Credentials so we can take a closer look.
Thanks

PyanfarParticipantThank you. FYI, deactivating all didn’t work, but I found the issue entirely by accident. Sorry this is a tome, but someone else searching might be helped.
After the upgrade, for the item I use as the default template for new items, the item/layout/newrow setting (which is a checkbox at the very bottom of that screen) became unchecked, and/or the default behavior I’d set up to have all items behave as if it were checked was deleted.
This checkbox isn’t covered in the documentation or tutorials that I could find. Whatever caused the break, by checking the box on an item and then forcing that item to be “set as default” the “new row” behavior came back.
FYI, in case anyone else runs into this frustrating situation of persisting and conflicting default settings:
There is no control panel setting to create default behavior new and unset items should inherit, so checking/unchecking that box and using the “set as default” (sprocket near the item’s save button) on that specific item is the only way to create a default behavior for new items.
As I have discovered, for already created items, changing the default will retrofit the existing items in unexpected ways. In practical terms, all my third level items were created without any need for further editing; they were created entirely based on the default that existed at the time.
So half my items are inheriting the default of “checked” and half are inheriting “unchecked” because I tweaked the “set as default” halfway through rebuilding the menu. The box isn’t checked in any of them.
Now if I change the default, they all toggle to the opposite setting. There’s no way I can find to override the default for all of them; where it’s stored it’s deep deep down in places I don’t want to go! *g*
It can be fixed manually. But it’s also worth noting that when I deleted Ubermenu completely, cleared my caches, then reinstalled Ubermenu, created a brand new menu and added my first item, my default item settings were still there; they were not deleted by the uninstall or by the control panel reset to default/out of the box. So this adds to a confusing lack of control for the non-developer user. It didn’t seem possible to truly start fresh.
If I have further issues I’ll be back. 🙂
